The kiwi bird is one of the most curious and interesting birds in the world. Although, described as a strange bird, the kiwi bird is quite an amazing species. A very interesting fact about the kiwi bird is that it has very strong legs, used for burrowing. Even if the kiwi bird is a bird species, you should know that it cannot fly. So, this bird will find both a home and food on the ground. And once finding a mate, the kiwi bird will keep it for life. There actually are kiwi birds which have been together for more than 20 years.

Commonly, the diet of kiwi birds is going to include worms, spiders, but also bugs and fruits. The kiwi bird will search for food on the ground, digging to find worms and all types of bugs. The kiwi bird has external nostrils, which can be filled with dirt due to the way the species catches its prey. To be able to catch its prey, the kiwi bird has developed an impressive strength into its legs, which are used for digging. The main diet of kiwi birds will most likely include insects, larvae, but also beetles, snails, crayfish and fruits. Kiwi birds will not tend to build new nests for themselves, but they are most likely going to reside in forests, woods and in their own burrows.

The kiwi bird is a nocturnal bird, so it will most likely feed during the night. Kiwi birds possess a quite impressive sense of smell, meaning that searching for food during the night will not be that hard for the species, which will be able to hunt basing on their great sense of smell. However, the kiwi bird will have a week eyesight, this actually being the best way to explain the way in which the species bases its feeding process, naturally on their developed sense of smell. Currently, there are five main species of kiwi birds. They include the brown kiwi, the great spotted kiwi, but also rowi, lesser spotted kiwi and tokoeka.

The Kiwi bird is a cute creature, endemic to New Zealand and also a symbol of this country. Even New Zealanders like to call themselves “Kiwis”.  The Kiwi bird is a rare creature as its habitat has been gradually destroyed, but pollution was another cause. Nowadays, the kiwi bird is protected, but it does not mean that it is safe.

This interesting animal is unusual from several points of view. Although a kiwi bird has the same size as a chicken, its eggs are half of its body. This bird has the largest egg in the world in comparison to its body proportion. This nice creature is famous also for its nostrils that are placed at the end of its beak. Its smell sense is very developed, which is another interesting fact about kiwi bird. The kiwi bird is a member of the order Apterygiformes and there are six species such as Apteryx haasti, Apteryx mantelli, Apteryx australis and Apteryx oweni. Studies have shown that kiwi bird evolution is related to New Zealand’s break away from Australia. Later, the kiwi bird left Australia and arrived in New Zealand. After this research, Australians can also consider kiwi bird as theirs, too. There are many programs and campaigns meant to help the kiwi bird from extinction. All articles try to convince people of the importance of this bird and of the increased possibility to become extinct.

People can see a kiwi bird in the zoos, so in case you are on a trip and there are zoos, find out if they have this amazing bird. A kiwi bird is a nocturnal one and to see it, visit the zoo after 2 p.m. There are still many things that have not yet been discovered about kiwi bird, but now it is more important to find a way to save it and protects it against predators such as dogs, loss of habitat and stoats. This bird species disappears at a rate of 5,8 % per year, so something must be done urgently.
